The job explained

Fault finding

What should I send first?

A photo of your consumer unit with the cover open, and of the socket, light or appliance involved. Say when it started and what trips.

Is it safe to keep resetting the switch?

No. A breaker or RCD that keeps tripping is doing its job. Leave it off and get it checked.

When is it an emergency?

If you smell burning, see scorching, or have no power to the whole property. See the emergency page.

Try this first

Three things before you ring

  1. 01Check the main switch and the trip switches on the board. Push the tripped one firmly down, then up.
  2. 02If it trips again, unplug everything on that circuit and reset. Plug things back in one at a time.
  3. 03If it trips with nothing plugged in, or you smell burning, leave it off and ring.

If you smell burning or see scorch marks, leave it off and ring 07871 575851.

Electrics can look fine and still not be safe.

Most electrical faults are hidden behind a faceplate or inside a wall. The only way to know an installation is safe is to test it and read the results, so that is where every job starts.

Questions

Is it safe now?

I only call a circuit safe once it has been tested and the readings are within the limits in BS 7671, and I tell you what was tested.

Why did it need doing?

I show you what I found: the reading, the damaged cable, or the missing protection, and explain the risk in plain terms.

Do you offer a 24-hour service?

No. Emergency calls are taken until 10pm. After that, WhatsApp or use the form and I'll call first thing.

Two ways to start
