Path lights

Paths and steps first. That is the lighting you use every night.

Armoured cable in a trench before the paving goes down, every outside circuit on its own RCD, and an outside socket by the back door so the extension leads stay in the shed.

The job explained

Garden lighting

How is garden lighting planned?

We walk the garden together, decide what you want to see after dark, and group the lights into circuits you can switch separately.

Is outdoor wiring safe?

It is when it uses cable and fittings rated for outdoor use, buried or fixed at the right depth, with protection on the circuit. Every circuit is tested before I leave.

When is the best time to do it?

Before a garden is landscaped, so cables can be run without lifting new paving or planting. It can also be added to an existing garden.

Electrics can look fine and still not be safe.

Most electrical faults are hidden behind a faceplate or inside a wall. The only way to know an installation is safe is to test it and read the results, so that is where every job starts.

Questions

Do I need to be home?

For a visit or a job inside the property, yes, or a key holder. For outside work, not always.

How long will it take?

Small jobs usually take a few hours, a consumer unit replacement usually a day, and a rewire of an empty three-bedroom house one to two weeks. Your quote gives the timing for your job.

Is it safe now?

I only call a circuit safe once it has been tested and the readings are within the limits in BS 7671, and I tell you what was tested.
