The job explained

Consumer unit replacement

What is a consumer unit?

It is the box where your electricity supply splits into the circuits for your home, with a switch or breaker protecting each one. Older homes often still have a fuse board with rewireable fuses and little or no protection against electric shock.

Do I need a new one?

Signs include rewireable fuses, a wooden or plastic-backed board, breakers that trip for no clear reason, or no RCD protection. Testing tells you for certain, and sometimes a new consumer unit means you do not need a full rewire.

How long does it take?

Usually a day for a typical house. The power is off for most of it, so I agree the timing with you in advance.

Will it cause any damage?

Usually none. The new unit goes where the old one was. If it needs to move, your quote says so.

Houses in Orpington

Orpington mixes 1930s and post-war semis, bungalows, larger detached houses towards Chelsfield and Farnborough, and 1960s and 70s estates. Bungalows and older semis often still have their original boards.

Orpington is in the London Borough of Bromley, so the council's notification fee for a consumer unit change is Bromley's. It is a separate line on your written quote, and I tell the council before the work starts.

Electrics can look fine and still not be safe.

Most electrical faults are hidden behind a faceplate or inside a wall. The only way to know an installation is safe is to test it and read the results, so that is where every job starts.

Case note · Bromley borough

Told she needed a full rewire. She did not.

An elderly customer had been told by another firm that her house needed a complete rewire, because bulbs kept blowing. I tested every circuit. The readings were safe. Instead of a rewire, her old fuse board was upgraded to a modern consumer unit with up-to-date protection.

She kept her walls, her decorating and thousands of pounds.

Questions

Will I be without power?

For most of the day, yes. I agree the timing with you in advance so you can plan around it.

Do I need a rewire instead?

Not always. Testing first can show that a smaller job, such as a new consumer unit, makes the installation safe.

Do you cover all of Orpington?

Yes, the whole of Orpington and the streets around it. I am based in West Wickham, in the same borough, and I take small jobs as well as large ones.
